Tiger Woods entered the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego in a precarious situation. His left knee had been bothering him for some time, and that severely limited his preparation for the annual open national championship of golf. In fact, he would have reconstructive knee surgery eight days after the tournament that would put him out for the remainder of the season. The pain was so apparent on his face throughout the weekend that he would grimace nearly each time he would swing.
The tournament provided some of the most memorably moments in golf history, including Woods’ birdie putt on 18 that forced a Monday playoff with Rocco Mediate. That moment captured here has become one of the most iconic celebration moments in the history of sport. The sheer joy mixed with an intense desire to win is evident on Woods’ face.
